Guidelines for Authors

• We welcome the submission of articles for consideration by the Editor with a view to publication.
• Please note that we now welcome longer academic articles of up to 10,000 words (inc. footnotes). The Criminal Law Review is double peer reviewed, can typically publish within six months of the submission being made and is highly regarded in terms of the REF.
• The most acceptable length of non-academic (practitioner) articles for The Criminal Law Review is 2,000–4,000 words, with the normal maximum being 5,000 words.
• The Criminal Law Review also welcomes short notes for its “Current Topics” section. These should deal with issues of practical relevance, and be no longer than 2,000 words.
• As there is strong competition for publication space, please ensure your piece is as polished as possible before submission.  For further information on the selection procedure and maximizing your chance of success, please send for a free copy of our booklet “Getting Published in The Criminal Law Review”. This is available from the House Editor at Dimple.Bhati@thomsonreuters.com. Most of our articles have an aspect of UK criminal law or procedure as their subject. The Criminal Law Review is also happy to publish articles based on empirical research into the working of the criminal justice system, but only if such articles are clearly written and relatively non-technical. Only rarely is the The Criminal Law Review able to find room for articles that deal with other legal systems.
• Papers to be considered for publication should be sent to: Dr Hannah Quirk at crimlreditor@gmail.com. Submissions should be in Word format so that they can be anonymized for peer review. Submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. All contributions must be sent at the owner’s risk. Every effort will be made to return unused material, but no guarantee can be given in this respect.
• Case reports. Please send reports to Dimple.Bhati@thomsonreuters.com. Please note that cases in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court are covered by our own team of reporters. Notification of significant cases can, however, be of assistance.
